Neuromuscular Technique

Newton Massage | Wellesley Massage | Turtle Dance Bodywork

Neuromuscular Therapy is used to address five elements that cause pain:

  • Ischemia: Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch
  • Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscles which can refer pain to other parts of the body
  • Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue or bone
  • Postural Distortion: Deviations of the body from a mechanical norm, typically a result of gravity’s pull or routine activities (working on computer, driving, slumping while seated) which hold the body in an imbalanced position over a period of time, and which become locked in the tissue.
  • Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance in the musculoskeletal system resulting from faulty movement patterns of the body brought on by injuries, often seemingly insignificant, that are not properly identified and corrected.

This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to support balance between the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems. The goal is to help relieve pain and dysfunction by understanding and alleviating the underlying cause. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress set off chemical reactions within the body, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction.
